A challenging WEC opener in Qatar

The 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) season got underway with the Qatar 1812km at the Lusail International Circuit. Of a 108-driver field, Célia Martin, Michelle Gatting and Rahel Frey were the only female representation, highlighting how unique the Iron Dames project truly is, and the work to bring about real change that still lies ahead.

Following her first ever WEC Qualifying session, Célia Martin took the opening stint of the Qatar 1812km and starting from 15th, faught valiantly to maintain position. A technical issue meant the car was briefly over the speed limit during a Full Course Yellow, resulting in a costly drive-through penalty. After a brief stint with Michelle Gatting at the wheel, Célia and an Alpine Hypercar made contact, forcing her to make another unscheduled pitstop.

Try as they might, Michelle, Célia and Rahel Frey were unable to recover the lost ground, but they persevered until the chequered flag and ultimately claimed 13th in the LMGT3 category. Throughout the 10-hour contest, the trio showcased the determination and tenacity that is fundamental to each and ever member of the Iron Dames.

THE NEW BRONZE

Sarah Bovy sat down with our new WEC Bronze driver Célia Martin to impart some words of wisdom ahead of the season opener.

“So, the first weekend together with Manthey is finished here in Qatar. There were a lot of ups and downs, but I’m very happy with the feeling in the car. We were lacking a bit of performance, but overall I think it was a positive race. I have a lot of trust in the team, and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for the collaboration between Iron Dames and Manthey.”
